Meggenhorn Castle

An unparalleled view of the Alps and the Lake of Lucerne.

It's easy to find, and once you've arrived, you can park at the gate and walk up to the castle, enjoying the beautiful views of the lake and Lucerne in the distance. As you approach the castle, the view is blocked by a hill. Once you arrive at the main entrance, you will be amazed by the garden and the building itself. The castle sits at the top of a hill overlooking Lake Lucerne and the Swiss Alps.

Castle
Meggenhorn Castle and its gardens are set on a hillside on a peninsula south of Lucerne. Inspired by the Châteaux of Chambord in the Loire Valley of France, the grounds have been open to the public since 1974. The castle overlooks a vineyard and is a popular picnic spot with access to the lake for swimming. There is also a family playground with farm animals for children to get close to. The castle offers 180° views of the city of Lucerne, Mount Pilatus and Mount Rigi.

Garden
On the ridge behind the castle, there's a beautiful garden that you can walk through and take in the breathtaking views of the lake and the Alps. The castle is very romantic and you can walk around the whole building. There's a path down to the lake and a family playground with animals. The view up to the castle is also very nice. There's a wonderful park bench at the top of the ridge with a spectacular view of the city of Lucerne.

Museum
The private living quarters of the former inhabitants are open to the public every Sunday afternoon from April to October. I didn't visit the living quarters, but I'm sure I will at the next opportunity.

This castle is stunning and very romantic. It is well worth the trip!

Short history

The château in its present form was built in 1868/70 for the Mulhouse industrialist Edouad Hofer-Grosjean. In 1886, Countess Amélie Heine-Kohn bought the castle and had the neo-Gothic chapel built.

In 1920, Jakob Heinrich Frey-Baumann, an industrial textile builder from Zurich, bought the property. In 1960, following the death of their parents, their two daughters inherited Meggenhorn Castle. In 1974 the property became the property of the municipality.
